Chapter 14. IoT Harmonization

In the previous chapters of this book, we just got a taste of the different methods and technologies used to create IoT applications. From simple to complex, using different patterns of communication, some secure others less so, the variety of technologies in use is enormous. In this chapter, we will take some steps back and review the original goal of why we want to create a Smart City, and what a Smart City really might be. Considering what we now know, this will result in some important conclusions. This chapter covers the following topics:

  • A review of the vision of a Smart City
  • Driving forces for the development of Smart Cities
  • Requirements for reaching these goals
  • An overview of required new standards
  • An introduction to the IEEE IoT Harmonization project
  • A presentation of new business roles
