This chapter covered some familiar material, as well as some new material. By now, you should be comfortable using the WebSphere eXtreme Scale APIs, and working with local and remote ObjectGrid instances.
We started this chapter with an existing project that was in poor condition. As we worked through the examples, we made some design decisions which allowed us to use WebSphere eXtreme Scale. We didn't just migrate all at once though. Instead, we saw how we migrate an application where we gain the most value from a distributed cache.
We made the decision to use the data grid in a fairly disruptive place in the project. It required rethinking of the original data access patterns and application workflow. Integrating with a data grid isn't just changing existing patterns. It requires knowledge of additional patterns using data grids. The preload process makes the application much more responsive without a long warm-up period.
