Configuring removable devices


As you know, computer systems, in addition to fixed storage technology such as hard disk drives (HDDs), also contain removable disks, such as external HDDs, USB flash drives, and Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) memory cards. All these storage technologies, except HDDs, are common since they can offer tremendous portability benefits. However, such benefits also entail disadvantages associated with the security and loss of data. That being said, this section teaches you how to prepare removable devices for use, data encryption in case they are lost or stolen, and how to enable access restrictions.

 

 

Formatting the removable devices

To format removable devices, you can useDisk Management, as well as Windows PowerShell. As to which tool you are going to use, it all depends on your own preferences. In Disk Management (see Figure 7.16), in the same way as fixed disks appear, the removable disks will appear:
