Overview of this book

As computer networks become ubiquitous, it has become increasingly important to both secure and optimize our networks. pfSense, an open-source router/firewall, provides an easy, cost-effective way of achieving this – and this book explains how to install and configure pfSense in such a way that even a networking beginner can successfully deploy and use pfSense. This book begins by covering networking fundamentals, deployment scenarios, and hardware sizing guidelines, as well as how to install pfSense. The book then covers configuration of basic services such as DHCP, DNS, and captive portal and VLAN configuration. Careful consideration is given to the core firewall functionality of pfSense, and how to set up firewall rules and traffic shaping. Finally, the book covers the basics of VPNs, multi-WAN setups, routing and bridging, and how to perform diagnostics and troubleshooting on a network.

Summary

In this chapter, we covered a lot of the configuration options that most pfSense users will want to use at some point. We briefly discussed IPv6 addressing, and how it is different compared to IPv4 addressing, because IPv6 addressing is a topic that will recur often as we delve further into pfSense. We covered some additional setup options not discussed in Chapter 2, Installing pfSense, and also discussed how to enable SSH login, which is useful if you are not at the console but still want to use the console menu or other console commands. We covered how to add interfaces and how to enable DHCP and DHCPv6 servers on those interfaces. Finally, we briefly discussed how to set up a VLAN in pfSense.

In the next chapter, we will cover one of the services that many pfSense users who are utilizing pfSense in a SOHO environment may want to make use of: captive portal.
