Python Projects for Kids

Overview of this book

Kids are always the most fast-paced and enthusiastic learners, and are naturally willing to build stuff that looks like magic at the end (when it works!). Programming can be one such magic. Being able to write a program that works helps them feel they've really achieved something. Kids today are very tech-savvy and cannot wait to enter the fast-paced digital world. Because Python is one of the most popular languages and has a syntax that is quite simple to understand, even kids are eager to use it as a stepping stone to learning programming languages. This book will cover projects that are simple and fun, and teach kids how to write Python code that works. The book will teach the basics of Python programming, installation, and so on and then will move on to projects. A total of three projects, with each and every step explained carefully, without any assumption of previous experience.

As stated on the most current pygame website, http://www.pygame.org/hifi.html, pygame is a set of Python modules designed for writing games. pygame, like Python, is free and open source, meaning that it can be used for free and shared with others. The developers of pygame have made sure that it is compatible with several different graphics display engines, so this means that the games developed using pygame could be played in a variety of environments. Installing pygame is a careful process, and you may need the help of your parents or another adult since there are a few steps. We will discuss the installation for Windows, Mac, and Linux in the next section of the chapter.

pygame is quite popular, and the website is undergoing revisions at the time of writing this. Sometimes, you will see an older part of the site, while other times, you will see a new part of the site. New parts of the pygame website look like this:

Meanwhile, older parts of the pygame website have a green...
