Using common tools


There are three main classes of geoprocessing tools:

  • Data extraction (for example, clip and select)

  • Overlay (for example, intersect and spatial join)

  • Proximity (for example, buffer and point distance)

With geoprocessing tools, we can perform geoprocessing operations. The geoprocessing operations are used to obtain new feature classes or nonspatial tables for a specific analysis.

Getting ready

In this exercise, we will perform an analysis to identify the possible consequences of creating a cycling infrastructure on Dacia Avenue, taking into account the existing road network, as shown in the following image:

Both sides of the street contain the following elements:

  • One 2-meter-wide footway for pedestrians' movements

  • Two 3.2-meter-wide lanes for moving and stationary vehicles

  • One 2-meter median used to separate the roadway from the cycling infrastructure

  • One 1.7 meter cycle lane
