Types of Solution


Within the context of Dynamics CRM, there are two types of Solutions:

  • Unmanaged Solutions

  • Managed Solutions

Each one of these solution types has its own strengths and properties, and are recommended to be used in various circumstances.

Unmanaged Solutions

An Unmanaged Solution is the default state of a solution. A solution is unmanaged for the duration while customization work is being performed in the context of the solution. An unmanaged solution is not necessarily intended to be distributed as such. It is a way for developers and system customizers to group together their customizations, while work is being performed on the system. When the work is completed, and the unmanaged solution is ready to be distributed, it can be packed as a managed solution.

On an unmanaged solution, the system customizer can perform various tasks. These include:

  • Adding and removing components

  • Deleting components that allow deletion

  • Export and import the solution as Unmanaged Solution
