Terminology and concepts

Before you start designing, implementing, or managing a Microsoft Teams phone system, you'll need to understand some basic terminology and concepts. This will help you communicate clearly with vendors, partners, other engineers, and end users.

Teams Phone

The overall platform is called Teams Phone, though some documentation previously referred to it as Cloud Private Branch Exchange (Cloud PBX), as well as Phone System. The term Phone System now generally refers to the license assignment enabling telephony features. Phone System is the Microsoft-hosted PBX system, providing both internal and external calling capabilities.
