Content of the WS-Addressing based header can be used by the BPEL runtime for correlation purposes. WS-BPEL 2.0 also provides a standardized mechanism using correlation sets, where the correlation property of the outgoing and incoming message is compared.

Asynchronous invocation is useful for external services, which take a long time to process the request and respond back to the BPEL process. So if the BPEL process is synchronous, there is a possibility that its client may time out before the BPEL process responds back.
