When Barnaby Jack gave his infamous 2010 Black Hat talk, he left his audience cheering and stunned. With a flair for showmanship, he presented an exploitation technique for automated teller machines (ATMs) named Jackpotting. Using malware that targeted vulnerabilities found in standard ATMs, he executed a live demo of this technique for an audience of security practitioners and hackers. In his demo, he remotely triggered a vulnerability that hijacked the ATM displays and triggered a graphical representation of a jackpot animation from a slot machine while spewing vast amounts of currency onto the stage.
