Summary
As you can see, there are many choices and considerations to take into account before deploying a biometric system. In this chapter, we examined some of the approaches we might take, along with questions we need to ask before implementation. The questions include the following: How should we approach the installation? Will we need a middleware solution? What are the advantages and disadvantages of some common biometric identifiers?
So that you appreciate what makes a biometric system exhibit exceptional performance, we reviewed some of the system errors. We then looked at what's involved in testing a biometric system, and what's necessary to provide a true picture of system performance.
We then took a look at the use of requiring more than one identifier, such as a security question or a token, and in some cases, more than one biometric modality. Finally, we examined why it is important to have standards, to ensure interoperability, and improved performance...
