Using the inventory data to your advantage


By storing hardware and software inventory, you are storing a huge amount of information about the devices in your environment, which can be used for numerous purposes. Common examples of how this data is used are as follows:

  • Automated removal of software

  • License compliance for your estate

  • Tracking the life of the assets

Making use of the inventory you collect is important for a number of reasons: the main reason is pure administration of your estate. For the preceding reasons, the inventory allows you to control your environment.

The way companies use inventory data varies; some companies use reporting to provide data for key performance indicators, while others just use the data for internal consumption within the team for anything from client health to what files are installed on the machine.

Controlling the inventory with control files
