Creating additional VMkernel interfaces on a VDS


Apart from the default VMkernel interface for the Management network, a need might arise to create additional VMkernel interfaces on a VDS. For example, VMotion, iSCSI, or vSphere replication will need a VMkernel interface for communication.

Getting ready

Create a new dvPortGroup or configure an existing dvPortGroup with the necessary configuration such as VLAN, MTU, and LACP (if required) before you proceed with creating a VMkernel interface.

How to do it…

The following procedure will guide you through the steps required to create a VMkernel interface on a VDS:

  1. Follow steps 1 through 6 from the previous recipe, Migrating VMkernel interfaces between a standard vSwitch and VDS.

  2. On the Manage VMkernel network adapters window, select the ESXi host onto which you want to create a new VMkernel interface and click on New Adapter to bring up the Add Networking wizard.

  3. On the Add Networking wizard, browse and select a dvPortGroup to place the VMkernel interface...
