Creating a backup of a VDS


You can export the configuration of a vSphere Distributed Switch to maintain a backup.

How to do it...

The following procedure explains how to export the VDS configuration:

  1. Right-click on the VDS and navigate to All vCenter Actions | Export Configuration to bring up the Export Configuration dialog box.

  2. Select the configuration to export. You can choose between exporting Distributed switch and all port groups or Distributed switch only. Supply an optional description if needed and click on OK to export the configuration, as demonstrated in the following screenshot:

  3. Click on Yes in the Confirm Configuration Export dialog box:

  4. Select a location to save the exported configuration to and click on Save to create a backup .zip archive.

How it works...

The backup taken is a snapshot of the current VDS configuration. The ZIP archive created will contain the VDS data in binary format. However, it does include a data.xml file with the VDS metadata. This backup ZIP archive can be...
