Importing a VDS into the data center from a backup


It is possible to import a VDS into a data center from a configuration backup. Unlike the restore operation which can only be done on a VDS, the import operation can be performed on a data center with or without the existing Distributed Switches in them. This functionality will come in handy if you want to create a similar VDS in a different data center. Refer to the Creating a backup of a VDS recipe to learn how to back up the VDS configuration.

How to do it…

The following procedure explains how to import a VDS into the data center:

  1. Right-click on the data center to which you intend to import the VDS to, and navigate to All vCenter Actions | Import Distributed Switch to bring up the Import Distributed Switch wizard.

  2. Click on Browse to locate and select the ZIP archive.

  3. If applicable, choose Preserve original distributed switch and port group identifiers by selecting the checkbox next to this option. Click on Next to continue.
