VMware NSX Cookbook

By: Bayu Wibowo, Tony Sangha

Overview of this book

This book begins with a brief introduction to VMware's NSX for vSphere Network Virtualization solutions and how to deploy and configure NSX components and features such as Logical Switching, Logical Routing, layer 2 bridging and the Edge Services Gateway. Moving on to security, the book shows you how to enable micro-segmentation through NSX Distributed Firewall and Identity Firewall and how to do service insertion via network and guest introspection. After covering all the feature configurations for single-site deployment, the focus then shifts to multi-site setups using Cross-vCenter NSX. Next, the book covers management, backing up and restoring, upgrading, and monitoring using built-in NSX features such as Flow Monitoring, Traceflow, Application Rule Manager, and Endpoint Monitoring. Towards the end, you will explore how to leverage VMware NSX REST API using various tools from Python to VMware vRealize Orchestrator.

Selecting a hardware VTEP gateway

In this recipe, we'll show you how to plan and select a hardware VTEP gateway to bridge a VXLAN logical switch to a physical port or VLAN on a hardware VTEP gateway.

Getting ready

You should have an idea of your hardware vendor name and the NSX version that you are going to use, but you can use the following VMware compatibility guide to check what is currently supported.

How to do it...

You should filter your selection to restrict output to only the relevant results. To do a lookup, follow these steps:

  1. Open your web browser and go to the VMware compatibility guide: http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl.
  2. Select Hardware VXLAN Gateway from the drop-down menu under the What are you looking for menu.
  3. Optionally, select ESXi Product Release Version, hardware vendor Partner Name, NSX Platforms version, and Keyword.
  4. Once you have selected all of your requirements, click the Update and View Results button.
