Software Inventory is a misnomer in Configuration Manager. The process should actually be called File Inventory because that's what it does. It collects information about files that are present on client systems. There are a few issues associated with the process and it is generally recommended not to use it in production sites.
Even if a file exists on a system, it does not necessarily mean that a particular software is installed. It's much more accurate to use the information from Add/Remove Programs. This tells you exactly what software is installed on a system. Ironically, this information is collected by hardware inventory.
