Chapter 2. Infrastructure as a Service

Now that we have made sure that all the necessary pieces are in place, we can start implementing a basic Infrastructure as a Service model using the Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c.

The IaaS model is essentially an abstraction of shared resources such as hardware, storage, and networks. The key here is that these abstract pieces of virtualized resources are provisioned on-demand according to various service levels and can be billed on the basis of actual usage (for example, storage for 1 GB may be charged at $0.00020 an hour or $0.15 a month). IaaS allows businesses to rent these virtualized computing resources instead of buying and maintaining permanent hardware. Most IaaS services offer self-service portals to provision resources.
