Unlike other storage systems, GlusterFS is a distributed filesystem that is capable of scaling to several petabytes and serving many thousands of clients. The filesystem requires no metadata server, thus there is no single point of failure. GlusterFS allows the creation of highly available storage clusters using commodity hardware, thus reducing costs and eliminating vendor lock-ins. As of Proxmox VE 3.4, there is a native storage plugin to attach GlusterFS to Proxmox clusters.
