In this chapter, we covered Ceph's monitoring needs and utilities. This included overall cluster states as well as individual Ceph components including MONs, OSDs, and MDS. We also investigated placement groups. The states of placement groups can change dynamically and they require close monitoring. Most of the changes that happen in a Ceph cluster are visibly surfaced from changes to placement groups. This chapter also covered several open source GUI monitoring dashboard projects. Some of these are managed and developed outside of Ceph proper, but they are also open source, so you can contribute to and benefit from these projects freely. We also covered an overview of Calamari and the new ceph-mgr dashboard. In the next chapter we will dive deeply into the guts of Ceph, exploring in detail all things CRUSH, replication and erasure coding, and additional detail surrounding Ceph's placement groups and data flow.
