Monitoring types – standard and detailed

Monitoring is only as effective as the interval the metrics are collected on. When our application experiences frequent changes in performance in very short intervals, it can be difficult to determine whether there is any kind of issue in our environment. For example, when our application experiences a spike in traffic for 2 minutes, our 5-minute metrics might not capture that spike. To allow for metrics that will suit every requirement of every application, CloudWatch allows for metrics collection in the following intervals:

  • Standard: 5-minute metrics are output by all AWS services by default at no cost.
  • Detailed: 1-minute metric collection on AWS services that can be enabled by the user and collected at an additional cost (10 detailed metrics are included in the free tier).
