Installing the Update Manager Download Service (UMDS)

The Update Manager Download Server comes in handy when the Update Manger server doesn't have access to the Internet to download patches.

In this section we will learn how to install the Update Manager Download Service.

UMDS 5.1 should be installed on a 64-bit machine only. It cannot be installed on the same machine running the Update Manager and it is only compatible with the Update Manager 5.1.

If UMDS 5.1 is being installed on a machine running an older version of UMDS (UMDS 4.x or UMDS 5.x) then the older version should be uninstalled before installing UMDS 5.1.

How to do it...

The following procedure will help you install the Update Manager Download Service:

Locate the VMware-UMDS.exe under the DVD ROM in the \umds folder.
Create a new database for UMDS and a DSN, as we did for the Update Manger. Refer to the recipe Preparing a database for vSphere Update Manager for instructions.
