Hyper-V virtual switch technical overview

To understand Hyper-V networking, it is essential to discuss the Hyper-V virtual switch, which provides networking capabilities to the virtualized workload created on Hyper-V. The Hyper-V virtual switch or virtual network has evolved over time with each different release of Hyper-V versions in Windows Server operating system releases.

The Hyper-V virtual switch functionality can be set up in three ways, either as an external virtual switch, an internal virtual switch, or a private virtual switch. A Hyper-V virtual switch can either connect to a single interface (network interface card or NIC) of the server or to multiple interfaces (NIC team). In the case of connecting to multiple network interface cards (NIC teaming), a Windows Hyper-V virtual switch can take full advantage of its network load balancing and failover capabilities. Depending on the type of communication needed for virtualized instances running on Hyper-V, an administrator can create...
