This recipe will cover how to optimize tape usage for DPM.
When Microsoft released the 2007 version of System Center Data Protection Manager, a new feature called co-location was introduced. The purpose of co-location was to create a tape optimization scenario where the DPM administrators could store data more efficiently on allocated tapes. The co-location feature was also introduced in the disk allocation methodology regarding Hyper-V, SQL, and client protected data sources that were placed in the DPM disk pool.
In the release of System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2, there is more GUI-based configuration for the co-location feature for tape optimization that will be described in this recipe.
