Restoring a SQL Server database from tape


This recipe will cover the scenario where you need to restore a SQL database from tape.

Getting ready

The most important thing to remember is that tapes needs to be kept in a healthy state to complete their expected lifetime. Now and then, you should exercise the tapes, which means reading data from them to verify that they are good to restore from; never trust a tape 100 percent.

How to do it…

  1. Open the DPM console and click on Recovery. Expand the tree on the right-hand side of the console and click on the SQL database that you want to restore. Choose the date and the recovery point time for restore.

  2. When you are restoring SQL databases from tape, you need to choose the correct recovery point in time for the restore. In the drop-down menu, the recovery point that is placed on a tape will be listed with (Tape).

  3. Right-click on the database and click on Recover… to start Recovery Wizard.
