Configuring the DHCP server for PXE boot


Once you have the TFTP server configured, the next step is to configure the DHCP server with the scope options 66 and 67.

Getting ready

Configure the TFTP server as explained in the recipe Configuring a TFTP Server with Auto Deploy files. Also, you will need a DHCP server available in the subnet of which the ESXi hosts' management network will be a part of.

How to do it…

The following steps will help you create a new DHCP scope and configure it with the TFTP information. However, if you already have an existing scope servicing the subnet, then you could start at step 12, to configure the scope options. Perform the following steps:

  1. On a Windows based DHCP server, bring up the DHCP Snap-in, right-click on IPv4, and click on New Scope.

  2. In New Scope Wizard, click on Next, specify a name and an optional description, and click on Next.

  3. On the next screen, choose the IP address range for the scope by specifying the start and the end IP address of the range.
