Creating a vSphere Distributed Switch


A vSphere Distributed Switch cannot be created on an ESXi host directly. You need to be connected to the vCenter Server either by using the vSphere Client or by using the vSphere Web Client. Also keep in mind that a VDS can only be created at a data center level in the vCenter inventory.

How to do it...

The following procedure explains how to create a new distributed vSwitch by using the vSphere Web Client:

  1. From the vCenter inventory, right-click on the data center at which you intend to create the VDS and click on New Distributed Switch to bring up the New Distributed Switch wizard.

  2. In the New Distributed Switch wizard, supply a name for the VDS and click on Next to continue.

  3. On the next screen, select a VDS version. This is an important selection because a newer version of VDS will not be compatible with an older ESXi version. Hence, depending on the version of the ESXi hosts in your environment, choose an appropriate VDS version. Make a selection and click...
