RDS licensing


Why do we need RDS licensing for XenApp? Recall from Chapter 1, Why Citrix XenApp® – Making the Case for App Virtualization, how the XenApp VDA requires that the underlying Windows server also be a Remote Desktop Session host. By leveraging the RDS (formerly known as Terminal Services) framework, Citrix can deliver a vast majority of today's enterprise applications to any device, while at the same time enhancing security, overhead control, and user experience. In order to achieve this, customers need to purchase RDS Licensing from Microsoft or an authorized reseller of Microsoft. As these licenses are per user and not concurrent, the sensible thing to do from the planning perspective is to buy as many licenses as there will be users with access to the XenApp environment.
