Chapter 5. Preparing Images and Videos

The image preparation to be used in responsive sites has been one of the most discussed issues recently because there is no technique approved by W3C yet. Meanwhile, the community has created some techniques, each one with its advantages, trying to resolve this issue.

We will begin this chapter by looking at basic image resizing. This technique may be incorporated into the code with no difficulty, but mobile users are waiting for better experiences.

However, only resizing the image is not so effective when it comes to smaller devices such as smartphones and tablets, because loading images with high quality in those devices may take a long time. Later, we will see the importance of image breakpoints and its benefits.

Also, we will focus our attention on videos, since they had been inserted into our code before HTML5, avoiding issues on site conversions from fixed to responsive ones.
