Tax classes and rules


One of the tasks that should be done by the store owner before the website launch is setting up taxes for the store.

Magento allows you to set up taxes based on your business needs. The general configuration for the taxes is located in the system configuration page that we reviewed before (STORES | Configuration | Sales | Tax):

As you can see in the preceding screenshot, there are tax classes that you can assign to shipping, products, and customers. This means that we will be able to assign specific tax rules through tax classes. New tax classes can be created when a new tax rule is defined.

You can review all the existing tax rules in the STORES | Taxes | Tax Rules section:

As you can see in the preceding screenshot, the default tax rule that is included in the Magento 2 sample data is Rule1. There you can see two tax classes that are associated with that rule:

  • Retail Customer

  • Taxable Goods
