Chapter 7. UX Tools

"We become what we behold. We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us."

 --Marshall McLuhan

Writing about UX tools in a book can sometimes be a wasted effort. Technology changes so quickly that what was new today becomes obsolete or out of date by the time the book is published. Add to this an ever-growing array of UX job titles—designer, architect, ethnographer, researcher, engineer—and an increasing array of tools, and it becomes hard to know which tools to use and how to choose. That said, to provide you with useful information that won't go out of style, let's look at some of the UX tools that never do.

In this chapter, we will cover:

  • The tools of the UX trade

  • How to get the most out of your tools

  • Why the most useful tools never go out of style
