Overview of this book

HoloLens, Microsoft’s innovative augmented reality headset, overlaps holograms into a user’s vision of their environment. Your ideas are closer to becoming real when you can create and work with holograms in relation to the world around you. If you are dreaming beyond virtual worlds, beyond screens, beyond pixels, and want to take a big leap in the world of augmented reality, then this is the book you want. Starting off with brainstorming and the design process, you will take your first steps in creating your application for HoloLens. You will learn to add gestures and write an app that responds to verbal commands before gradually moving on creating sounds in the app and placing them in a 3D space. You will then communicate between devices in the boundaries of the UWP model.

The workflow to identify your features

It is not easy to identify what your app needs to shine. I earlier stated that you have to ensure that your app is goal-driven, but how do you achieve that? To help you do this, I have created the following workflow that you might want to follow when thinking about your next project:

  1. Write down your mission statement.
  2. Brainstorm all ideas.
  3. Remove ideas that don't support the mission statement.
  4. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves.
  5. Prioritize must-haves.
  6. Implement.

Writing down your mission statement

Think about your idea. Can you describe it in one line? To help you do that, I have created a template to fill in:

"My app [app name] is the best app to help [audience] [task it is achieving] in order to [reason to achieve this task]"

Fill in the app name, the audience, the task it is achieving, and the reason to achieve it, and you have a mission statement. I will give you some examples:

  • My app PlaneSpotter is the best app to help plane spotters track planes in...
