Using Placeless Translation Services for i18n support

Zope translation services are based in the GNU internationalization and localization gettext library (http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext).

In a nutshell, Zope fetches all registered catalog (po) files and compiles them at startup time, creating mo files so that it can get proper translations for requested message IDs.

For a long time, Placeless Translation Services (PTS) has been commonly used for these tasks. Although there's a new approach recommended by the community (covered in the next section) most Plone out-of-the-box products still use PTS.

This section won't produce any usable code at all, but it will show how to organize and register internationalization catalogs in our products.

How to do it…

Create catalog files. For PTS to register and use our message catalogs, we must create an i18n directory inside the product's main folder and drop all required catalog files. It's a good practice to use filenames like <domain>-<lang_code...
