Creating a clearance category


Creating a catalog or shopping cart price rule is a standard Magento technique. With a little extra effort, we can make these standard techniques even more effective. One way is to create a clearance category.

Getting started

Stores often have clearance sales, where they try to sell specific items at a deep discount. Sometimes, these items have nothing in common, except that the store owner wants to get rid of them. In a physical store, you might create a sale rack or clearance section. You would put all of these deeply discounted products into the clearance section.

You can also create a clearance section in your online store. Just like you created categories for different types of products (single origin coffees, blended coffees, African coffees, and so on), you can create a category for clearance products. And just as your other categories can appear in the site's navigation menu, the clearance category can appear in the navigation menu.
