Summary

In this chapter, we've covered what's new in using extensions for Joomla! 1.6:

  • The collection of extensions that comes with Joomla! 1.6 shows some welcome new additions. A new component is Redirect Manager, used to redirect visitors from outdated URLs to new URLs.

  • New modules include Article Categories and Articles Category, used to present categories and their contents.

  • The new Extension Manager screen contains five tabs, each featuring its own specific functionality: Install, Update, Manage, Discover, and Warnings.

  • The new Extension Manager Update functionality simplifies the process of updating installed extensions.

  • In Joomla! 1.6, you can schedule the time during which a module should be displayed.

  • Assigning modules to menu items has become much easier. For example, you can now choose to display a module on all pages, except the ones selected. Moreover, you can now select module assignment directly from the Edit Menu Item screen.
