Not all the available shipping plugins are listed in the Joomla! extensions directory. They can also be found in the VirtueMart forum's third party extension section or at extensions.virtuemart.net.
Gather a list of zip code ranges to cover the states you are interested in. You will see the beginnings of a plan to cover the whole of the USA by proceeding alphabetically through the first three states. You can get approximate zip ranges by state from www.unitedstateszipcodes.org. The first three zip ranges are given in the following table:
