A QR code is an image that can be scanned by a QR code reader. This is conceptually similar to a bar code but can be scanned in by smartphones, which will convert the QR code to a URL and launch it in the phone's browser.
The intention is to link physical objects to web pages, and despite being invented for industrial use, they are now commonly seen in magazines and billboard advertisements, and have many uses in education.
QR codes are used for QR code treasure hunts that require students to locate and scan QR codes. Each web page that the QR code links to will contain one part of the answer to the exercise, and after collecting all the data the students can complete a quiz.
Printed materials can include QR codes for students to scan and download the handout to their mobile devices.
QR handouts can include links to further reading that will automatically open on students' mobile devices.
