E-learning SCORM packages have been the dominant form of online learning in the corporate world since the 1990s, although they are less widely used in the education sector. SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model and is a standard that enables content developers to create a single e-learning course with the confidence that it will work with all SCORM-compliant learning management systems.
At least that's the theory. In practice, there are hundreds of authoring tools and learning management systems in the marketplace, and not all of them have implemented SCORM in the same manner so it hasn't achieved the true interoperability that was hoped for, but it has certainly gone a long way towards it.
