There are many techniques for engaging learners during completion of a course, and a very simple technique that can be used in Moodle is to use a course structure based on games. This is useful for mobile learning as you only have short periods of your user's time and need all of the engagement tools that you can think of to keep your learners using the site.
This technique uses a standard Topics format course, but sets up each topic to be revealed in turn based on some completion criteria, such as an end of topic assessment. On first entry to the course Level 1 is revealed, and further levels are only revealed as the user progresses.
To set up a course based on games using levels, perform the following steps:
Click on Course administration | Edit settings.
Under General, select Topics format as the value for Format.
Under formatting options for Topics format select the following:
