Generating and caching thumbnails with the Image helper

Many types of applications make use of thumbnails to display representations of larger images. This allows users to see many images on one page without having to wait for several large file sizes of images to load.

Getting ready

The Image helper's thumbnail generator accepts a File object, so make sure to refer to Chapter 3, Files and File Sets, to know how to get those loaded.

How to do it...

Open /config/site_post.php in your code editor.
Load the Image helper:
```
$ih = Loader::helper('image');
```
Load the File object that we want to create a thumbnail of. This should be an image (JPEG, PNG, or GIF) and should exist in the File Manager. We will use the ID of 1 for our example image:
```
$fileId = 1;
$image = File::getByID($fileId);
```
Generate a thumbnail with a height and width of 100 pixels, and crop the image to fit:
```
$thumbnail = $ih->getThumbnail($image, 100, 100, true);
```
Echo the thumbnail image's source location:
```
echo $thumbnail->src;
exit;
```
