Determining the MIME type of a file extension using the MIME helper

concrete5 can easily determine the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) type of a file using the MIME helper.

How to do it...

  1. Load the MIME helper:

    $mime = Loader::helper('mime');
  2. Determine the MIME type of a JavaScript file:

    $jsMime = $mime->mimeFromExtension('js');
  3. Verify that the MIME type is correct:

    echo $jsMime; // outputs 'application/x-javascript'
    exit;

How it works...

The MIME helper contains an array of several common MIME types and their related extensions. When you give the MIME helper an extension to find, it will simply find the related MIME type and return it to you.

There's more...

The MIME helper can also return the file extension of a given MIME type:

$jsExt = $mime->mimeToExtension('application/x-javascript');
echo $jsExt;
