Introduction

One of the libraries is OpenGL ES (a library meant especially for embedded systems) whose root is OpenGL (Open Graphics Library). But OpenGL ES is of no use on the web. Therefore, a new API was developed by the Khronos group named WebGL (Web Graphics Library).

The parent of WebGL happens to be OpenGL ES, whose root is OpenGL. Using OpenGL ES or OpenGL on the web will be difficult as one has to again develop a library especially for the web and then use it for rendering graphics. WebGL is one such library for rendering 2D and 3D graphics on any compatible browser. three.js is customized only for 3D graphics.

three.js is a lightweight library based on WebGL for rendering 3D objects on the web. It's a library with a very low level of complexity. The library is still evolving and getting better. This chapter is an effort toward understanding the use of the three.js API with HTML5 Canvas especially for rendering 3D objects.

Please note that the chapter covers the use of three.js and...
