Website, store, store view: What's the difference?


Before we create a new store for our international audience, we need to learn some Magento terminology. Understand that Magento uses the terms website, store, and store view differently than we do in casual conversation.

If your customer is looking at your online store, he/she is looking at a store view. A store view is the presentation of a store. When a customer chooses a language or store from Magento's drop-down list, that customer is really selecting a store view.

A store without a store view can never be viewed by your customers. Changing the store view is not intended to change the content of the store that the shopper sees. Instead, it changes just the wording, images, and/or design.

Behind every store view is a store. In Magento, a store is defined as a collection of products that are all under the same root category. In the following screenshot, the store views Brew-Me-A-Cup and Brew-Me-A-Pot are both under the store labeled Main...
