Starting your Application

Exception handling and resolving errors


If you were to try to go back to your signup form and save another document with the name John Doe, you would see a pretty unfriendly error page that looks something similar to the following screenshot:

If you are using a browser other than Chrome, you probably received a different message, but the result is still the same. Something bad happened that we didn't expect, and even worse, we aren't capturing these exceptions.

What happens when something goes wrong? How will we figure out what broke? The answer is: we look at the logs.

Deciphering error logs

When PHP and Apache are working together, they produce a lot of logs for us to look at. Some are access-level logs, and others are error-level. So let's see if we can investigate what's happening here by looking at the Apache error log.
