Joomla! has default support for different languages. The site can work in any language so long as the translation is available. The same is true for VirtueMart. It has a sophisticated language system of its own and is multi-language-enabled. It will display the correct translation of the language, as reported by Joomla!. You just need to ensure that the language files are in place.
All the language files are placed in the languages
subdirectory under the VirtueMart administrator root. These language files are grouped by modules. The following screenshot shows the structure of the VirtueMart languages directory:
As you can see, all the 16 modules of VirtueMart have their own subdirectories. There are two additional subdirectories not corresponding to any module: common
and msgs
. The msgs
language files are not actually used. The common
subdirectory is used for storing common language elements, as explained further below.
