Adaptive Images optimization, which we did in the last chapter, was based on one parameter—screen width. With mobiles and modern devices, this might not be optimal. Just imagine someone using the new iPad (or another tablet with a large screen) with a weak 3G connection, or worse, GPRS with a pay-per-bandwidth plan.
That is why web developers would love to see bandwidth media queries. Knowing when the connection is made via low bandwidth would allow sending of extremely compressed images, while when the connection comes via a fast connection, we could serve the best quality we have. The problem is that bandwidth media queries "doesn't seem to be something that can be accurately implemented in the near future," as stated by Yoav Weiss in the article titled Bandwidth Media Queries? We Don't Need 'Em! in the Smashing magazine (available at http://mobile.smashingmagazine.com/2013/01/09/bandwidth-media-queries-we-dont-need-em/) after detailed...
