Creating a distributed port group


A distributed port group (dvPortGroup) can only be created from the vCenter Server. Every dvPortGroup created has a default of eight available ports. Port allocation is elastic, which means that the port count will automatically increase or decrease as needed.

How to do it...

The following procedure explains how to create a distributed port group:

  1. Connect to the vCenter Server using the vSphere Web Client and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + 6 to go to the Network Inventory view.

  2. Right-click on the VDS on which you want to create a dvPortGroup and click on the menu item New Distributed Port Group, as shown in the following screenshot:

  3. In the New Distributed Port Group wizard, supply a name for the dvPortGroup and click on Next to continue.

  4. On the next screen, configure the port group settings (Port binding, Port allocation, Number of ports, Network resource pool, and VLAN type) as per your requirements, and click on Next to continue:
