Share Nothing Live Migration


When Microsoft first launched Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008, the only available VM migration option was the already covered Quick Migration. At that time, the main pain point was that the regular NTFS filesystem did not support simultaneous read/write operations from multiple nodes. On Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft introduced the CSV filesystem, which works on top of NTFS, as explained in the previous chapter.

During the development phase of Windows Server 2012, one of the feedbacks from customers was that Live Migration was an excellent feature, but some of them wanted to be able to move VMs onto standalone nodes that were not using shared storage. At that time, it sounded like an impossible task to accomplish.

On Windows Server 2012, Microsoft introduced Share Nothing Live Migration. This feature allows you to move a running VM from one host to another host without a cluster and without shared storage. So, how does this work?
