Over the last few decades, OpenSearch, along with open source solutions such as Apache Lucene, Apache Solr, and Elasticsearch, and commercial solutions such as FAST, Autonomy, and Endeca, were the ways that companies built and provided search in applications and websites. All of these solutions operated by providing (at least) textual matching—searchers would type some words, perhaps use some facets, and the search engine would employ text matching to retrieve results. As the technology matured, search engines added additional capabilities for geographic information, expanded numeric capabilities, and even analytics on top of numeric data.
The last few years have seen a profound shift in how people access information and how information systems automate the use of that information.
