Data blending allows you to use data from multiple data sources (not just multiple connections in a single source) in the same view. Often, these sources may be of different types. For example, you can blend data from Snowflake with data from Excel. You can blend Google Sheet data with a spatial file. Data blending also allows you to compare data at different levels of detail. Let’s consider the basics and a simple example.
As Tableau’s data model capabilities have matured, the cases where data blending is the best solution have diminished. It is still an important concept to understand but try to consider alternative solutions using the data model. We’ll summarize cases when to use or not use various methods of relating data in the section When to use a data model, joins, or blends at the end of the chapter.
